RGS data shows breadth of education value

15th Dec 2018

Analysis of OP state data released today reveals just how well Rockhampton Grammar School students performed this year compared to students across Queensland.

“Almost 3% of the state OP population received a top result. By comparison, almost 9% of RGS students (12 students) achieved OP1s. That’s three times more,” explained RGS Headmaster Dr Phillip Moulds.

The really valuable statistics however, according to Dr Moulds, are in the other achievement bands as they show the breadth of RGS students performing well.

“At Grammar, because of our excellent teachers and support, more than 96% of our students are achieving outcomes from OP1 to 15. That’s a critical difference and that demonstrates, in one way, the value of RGS. At other schools, top performance often comes at the expense of others in the cohort. Not here,” added Dr Moulds.

Data was not available to provide a direct comparison with local schools, although each Central Queensland school will have had their results available to them today. RGS, which has no academic prerequisites (entry requirements) chose to share its data.

“Parents across Central Queensland who choose RGS for their children, in secondary school for example, understand that this environment – our teachers, our methods, support structures and opportunities – enables students to perform their best so they can become well-rounded young people,” said Dr Moulds.

Achievement, of course, is not limited to OP outcomes. At RGS, 20% of 2018 graduates chose Vocational Education, an equal pathway to success.

100% of the School also achieved a Queensland Certificate of Education. 98% earned VET qualifications from Certificate I to III. More than half, 53%, were awarded Certificates II and III.

RGS also earned acclaim outside of the classroom in 2018, continuing its tradition of sporting excellence.

Outstanding team performances this year included: Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Queensland Secondary Schools Rowing Championships across all year levels; Silver Medallist at the National Secondary Schools Championships in Sport Aerobics; Queensland Country Boys Champions in Tennis; Ballymore Cup Runners up in Opens and Champions in U16 for Rugby Union; First VII Magic were RNA Premiers in Netball and 9A Storm were Schoolgirls and Rockhampton Vicki Wilson Shield Champions; Rockhampton District Champions in First XI Cricket;  Rockhampton Champions in Waterpolo, Rockhampton Champions in First XIII Rugby League. Our students also came together to be awarded Rockhampton and District Secondary Schools Premiership Teams in all three District Carnivals: Swimming; Athletics; and Cross Country.

More than 220 girls and boys will join RGS as new students in 2019, with the School currently responding to summer-time applications following other schools’ end-of-year results. This chart shows RGS’s performance to date.
